Visit one of Sussex's award-winning vineyards
With its chalky soils, gentle slopes, and mild coastal climate, the South Downs has become one of the most celebrated wine regions in England. The landscape shares many of the same geological features as Champagne in France, making it ideal for producing world-class sparkling wines. Over the past few decades, vineyards here have flourished, earning international acclaim for their crisp, elegant styles that reflect the purity of the region’s terroir.
Enjoy more than just the wine – the South Downs also offers sweeping vineyard views, historic estates, and a warm, welcoming approach to wine tourism, where tours and tastings are designed to immerse you in both the craft and the countryside.
Around 50 minutes from Pagham, Nyetimber is one of the pioneers of English sparkling wine, crafting blends to rival the very best from Champagne. Tours here are offered on select dates and include a guided walk through the vineyards, insight into the meticulous winemaking process, and a tasting of their signature sparkling cuvées. Check their tour calendar for availability.
Closer to Pagham Beach House, only a 20-minute drive, lies Tinwood Estate, known for its modern winery and relaxed atmosphere. Their daily tours are perfect for a sunny afternoon, often ending with a glass (or two) on the terrace overlooking neat rows of vines. For something special, Tinwood also offers sunset tastings and afternoon tea experiences paired with their sparkling wines.
Located just outside Petworth is Roebuck Estates which has several vineyards situated in and around Midhurst (one pictured above). Their stylish tasting tipi is located between Midhurst and Petworth and they offer Saturday Sipping Special evenings in this glorious location.

Further into the South Downs and just down the road from Nyetimber, Wiston Estate combines centuries of farming heritage with a state-of-the-art winery. Their tours include a walk through the historic estate, a peek into the impressive winery, and a tasting in the beautifully restored Dairy Barn. The on-site restaurant, Chalk, is a perfect spot for a seasonal lunch afterwards, with menus designed to complement their wines.
Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable day out, these vineyards offer a delicious window into the craftsmanship and charm of the South Downs. Each glass holds the story of the landscape – crisp, fresh, and full of character – much like the region itself.
